Liverpool Biennial, The Cunard Building exhibition by Mona Hatoum

I have chosen to write about the exhibition titled ‘Present Tense’ by Mona Hatoum. This piece is a large rectangle made up of individual cubes of soap, on the surface of the soap are small dots that were imprinted using glass beads. I found this interesting as for a moment my mind was seeing different media to what was actually used, the texture of this piece was waxy ad each piece looks partially discoloured. I really like the fact that it is not a perfect formation and that each cube had its own flaws that made them all different and unique. The way in which the map was imprinted to me was thought provoking as it was informative of the Oslo peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, a piece of history that I would not have known about if not for this sculpture. The positioning of the small dots highlights the territories that were to be given back to the Palestine’s during the 1993 agreement. I did not expect the story behind this piece to appeal to me as much as it did, after doing some further research on this piece I discovered the reasons for the use of materials was very wisely though out and the message behind it is somewhat inspiring.
Although I have been inspired to look further at the piece and the artist herself, I do not feel that I would approach my own work differently except in a sense that I will try and relate what I do to a particular event or journey making the outcome more personal and inspirational to myself and others. In doing this I hope to have an effect on the outcome of aspiring artists who have similar interests in the processes and techniques that I plan to use.
