Changing the state

After looking at my images I started to cut out various sections of them and put them back together as a separate image. 

They seem to look pretty boring as in the cut out sections there is nothing really interesting going on.

I'm not sure this idea is going to get me anywhere in terms of productiveness.

In the third image shown I like how the sections show 'significant' parts of the image such as the licence plates on the cars, the litter bin and the tree. It's like I have selected these for a reason, a point I may consider looking at for more inspiration.

Although I am not completely satisfied with how these have turned out, I believe that 'Changing the state' of the images could be an interesting concept to follow!

London

So today was the trip to London... Unfortunately the coach was delayed and we did not arrive in London until 4/4:30pm, this was very frustrating as I had lost a lot of valuable time. Upon arrival I looked the various tourist maps plotted around the city in hope for some guidance as to where I was going, as it was my first time there without a clue where anything was I ended up getting lost and missing the exhibitions that I wished to see. Putting aside the negative parts of the trip I managed to get some great images to work from.

The images I took are not what I feel typically represents 'the Urban elements of the city' as I wanted to look behind the obvious elements like graffiti and tall buildings, to focus on the parts of the Urban City that people tend to discard but are essential in everyday life.


I mainly focused on the different road markings as although people see them everyday not everyone appreciates them.

I find it intriguing how each 'marking' has some sort of instruction either by way of writing or a symbol. The shapes in these images could lead to some interesting knit samples!

Triangle shapes here could be interpreted by a partial knit with hold.

This pattern on the road reminds me of a laddered knit.

This image is slightly different to the rest as it is an instruction for direction, maybe I should try giving myself rules for direction with in my work?

I like that this image shows a variety of potential for repetitive patterns.

 The last images shown here are more descriptive instructions, they say what a certain part of the road is for and what you should do when your there which I find interesting as I start to imagine if they weren't there what would happen?

Urban Influences

As I am looking at the Urban Influences brief I initially think of the city, graffiti, and big tall buildings. Living in the city should make this project easier in terms of finding inspiration but I aim to look outside of Manchester and explore other cities. My first place of interest for research is London, I feel that going here will give me great opportunities for first hand images and trips to some amazing galleries and exhibitions.

Inspiration

Now that I am focusing on a new brief I thought I would have a lot more inspiration than I do. I am really struggling to find motivation and I'm feeling stressful about it already. I think this is due to not having anything solid to start from as of yet.

Deciding on a new brief

As mentioned in my previous post I have created mind maps for the briefs I am choosing between, I seem to be showing more inspiration towards the Urban influences one and I feel that it will be a much more interesting project.

New Project...

Looking at the new briefs we have been given I am finding it hard to relate any of them to my work, because of this I am going to chose one and start a fresh project! 

I think I am going to look at two briefs and create mind maps for each of these to determine which will give me the better possibilities and outcome.

Summer Project

Over the summer I have been working a lot which hasn't left much time for going out to get research for my project, as I have been working in a factory that specialises in Hydrofiber Technology Textiles I decided to see if I could get a few samples. One of my colleagues was kind enough to give me a large selection of the different size, thickness and quality fibres that they produce, which led me to experiment with what happens when you wet the fibre with different liquids.

These particular images show the reactions of 3 different types of the hydrofiber material and different temperatures of water, I was very intrigued by these as once they were dry they became a crisp solid structure.

After doing this I didn't really have a concept or direction of work so I moved on to look at what first hand reference I was able to get, as I visited the zoo and took some interesting images I turned them into  starting point. I then looked at the different patterns that you find within each of the animals fur/skin etc, I was then able to work fro these images and edited certain sections of them to create new and different images to work from. 

Here are a few of the images that I have edited:
 I find the colours in these images very inspiring, I'm not entirely sure what it is about them but I feel they could make a great colour palette. I also love the way that the patterns in the images have altered slightly as this gives a more digital effect to the outcome.

 

In response to the edited images I attempted to recreate them using a variety of mixed media and embroidery techniques:

I was also able to get more first hand reference from my dad's pets as he has quite a collection of snakes, they are rather intriguing creatures and each have unique patterns on them. These also made for fantastic drawing material and I thought I could continue my pattern related ideas with a strong concept.

Unfortunately this wasn't the case and I then moved on to look at African tribal wear as I was greatly intrigued by their garments and the patterns within them. After doing some research into African Art as a whole and also as individual areas I became greatly inspired to create a selection of samples using colourful yarns, I personally felt like I had a great direction to follow but when faced with choosing a new brief I could not relate any of them to my work.

This has left me in a situation where I must start from scratch.
