Drawings

These images show a few of my drawings from my sketchbook drawings, for these I have used various different media's such as ink, bleach,collaging, charcoal.

Charcoal Drawing

When I saw this image it reminded me of my ink and bleach drawings so I did another drawing with a similar pattern, I also thought that it had a similar linear quality to images that I took of fireworks.

Ahonen & Lamberg I saw this image and immediately thought of crackle nail polish, I initially wanted to paint my nails and photograph them but as I thought about it more thoroughly I realised that a picture might not be the best way to show the technique. A few ideas later I decided to use false nails to paint on to and the outcome was brilliant, the way each nail turned out totally unique was really intriguing to me. From this I had another idea to create 'cut-out' drawings which I did by drawing random shapes and then cutting them out leaving a stencil like pattern.

Experimental Drawings

As I was still slightly unsure of what kind of data my project was going to be based on I created drawings using simple lines and having different restrictions for each drawing, I started by using ink and bleach combined with different tools/paper such as balls rolled in ink and kitchen roll as a surface, I feel that I had some really interesting outcomes these being my favourite:

Starting Point

At first my drawings were very similar as I decided that I would use the same approach to them only making minor changes within each one, for example what media I used, using colour or just black and white. Shown here are a few images of my drawings.

For this project I decided to start by looking at collecting my own Data in various ways. My first set of data consists of a tally chart listing countries where my classmates have visited, I then used the shapes of the most popular countries to create my first set of drawings.

Unit Evaluation

I feel that Throughout this project I have developed my work by learning new techniques and putting them into practice, I am really pleased with all of my practical elements in terms of my weave and knit samples, my larger drawings and a small amount of my sketchbook work. I do however feel that my sketchbook lacks as much energy as my other practical work, in future I will be sure to keep my sketchbook up to the same standard to guarantee a more successful project.

During my research I chose my favourite artists, images and colours to work from, in doing this I created drawings, paintings and samples. I feel that I could have presented this better as I did not reflect and evaluate all of these things, due to this I feel my sketchbook was slightly confusing and seems hard to understand the thoughts behind what I and why I did certain things.

I feel that I have discovered a new self confidence in terms of using techniques and processes as I am now able to experiment much further in all aspects of my work. I have also realised that on a personal level if I am not thoroughly enjoying the project it reflects in work which has been an issue in this particular project, even though it is seen as a problem I can use this knowledge in the future and to be sure I don’t make the same mistake again.

In relation to lateral thinking I feel that this shows in the way I have presented some of my samples. In particular my final 7 knit samples, as when you look at them the initial reaction could be many different things when in fact I aimed to create a ‘knitted cityscape’. After I did this I was told to mount 2-3 pieces per A3 page so I had to take it apart and remount them as required, because of this I included an image of the pieces which shows how I originally wanted them. I feel that the picture did not really compliment the better characteristics of the pieces as a whole but it did show the essence of a cityscape rather well.

I think that I am managing my time well in terms of getting all of my work done and handed in on time, but unfortunately during this unit I missed a few sessions due to hospital appointments but I do not feel that this has affected my outcome.

Knit Samples

After doing 3 weeks of weave, i moved on to start knit, i created many samples using the same yarns that i did in my weave but decided i didn't like the way my pieces were turning out. To solve this problem i changed from using a Shetland yarn to cotton yarns that varied in weight. in doing this the tones/shades in my original colour palette changed to more subtle and bright colours as opposed to a basic earthy/autumn selection.
